A Poem by Gabriel Mattix

Misery upon misery;

Life is full of misery.

Is there more?

Is this it?

To me life seems a hopeless pit.

Misery upon misery;

Is this all there is to life?

I lay down in pain and anguish;

And I wake in ceaseless strife.

I search high and low for answers.

I crawl through shards of glass.

I want to know the purpose.

Can it be so wrong to ask?

As I stare into the blackness;

The starless night that we call life.

An answer comes from heaven,

A pure and searching light.

I thought that it was I,

Who searched every place and clime.

But no, I have been wandering;

Whilst my Savior has drawn nigh.

He came to show me beauty;

He came to give me love.

I’ve gone from aimless searching,

To blessed rescue from above.

He grabbed my hand and told me,

‘Misery is not your lot.

There is a future to your story;

Follow me my son,

Fear not.’

There is Light that shines in darkness.

Where He shines the dark must flee.

He gives hope to the hurting,

And soothes their suffering.

Life is not only misery.

Life is not only pain.

Because Jesus suffered for us,

We will live in Him again.

Come to Him you who wander.

Come to Him you in pain.

He will guide you with His glory,

And what you suffer will be gain.

Fix your eyes on Jesus.

Hold fast to Him in faith.

He will bring you home to heaven,

And misery you will not know again.
