Sorrow upon sorrow,
In this world there is no end.
There always is more heartache,
Around each and every bend.
Streams of tears flow.
Constant suffering abounds.
Cruelty most oppressive,
Never fails to make it rounds.
Like a vicious jailer,
It mocks and taunts our wounds.
It binds in fetters tightly,
Hope of rescue it precludes.
Depressions a hard master.
He rubs salt in the cuts.
He drives us yelling, “faster!”
While audaciously he struts.
He says not to trust or hope;
Joy has forsaken us.
‘Get yourself a rope,
There’s nothing to discuss.’
We must not listen to them.
The devil is a liar.
King Jesus came from heaven,
To cast death on its pyre.
He trampled down depression;
Drove cruelty to the grave.
He crushed the head of Satan,
So that us, He might save.
He bore God’s righteous wrath,
To give us living water.
To free us from life’s sorrow,
He submitted to the slaughter.
He rose up from the grave,
That we might so live too.
A life of no more suffering,
Just pleasure pure and true.
Look up from your sorrows.
Take your eyes off of your hurt.
The joy that’s found in Jesus,
Evil never can pervert.
If it were up to us,
We would fall and fail to rise.
But those who trust in Jesus,
Will surely claim their heavenly prize.
He offers true hope,
A certainty that He,
Will to us now and always,
A steady anchor be.
He drank deep of our sorrows,
And devoured mankind’s pain.
Though we face more dark tomorrows,
Like Him we’ll rise again.
Hate could not hold Him down;
Christ has risen from the dead.
He now sits enthroned and crowned,
Come feast on the heavenly Bread.
Those who weep and sow in tears,
Will reap a harvest of delight.
Hold fast now to Jesus,
You’ll be victorious in this fight.
