Living Water

We did not create ourselves, and ourselves we can’t sustain.
Nothing we barter, buy or sell, will help us on this Earth remain.

For you and I are vessels, earthen pots made by our God.
All we have comes from without; with life itself we must be shod.

As vessels we must be filled, constantly with living water,
And be carried by the hands of our God, the Master Potter.

Apart from God we will be empty, for it is by Him we were made.
It is only by His hand, that satisfaction is conveyed.

We enter life on Earth with a thirst nothing can slake,
Save for the living water flowing from the words that Jesus Spake.

As we draw nigh to the Fountain, the One worthy of all esteem,
Bids us, “Come, be welcome; be cleansed and be redeemed.”

We were all made to crave, ultimate and lasting satisfaction,
But for us this has been lost, because of our sinful action.

We rejected the living God, the source of all life and light.
Now, empty vessels, we must trod, hopeless in the night.

But our God, He is gracious; Christ Jesus is His name.
He laid down His life to save us, and snatch us from the flame.

As earthen vessels we were empty, languishing ‘neath our debt for sin,
But Christ saw that we were thirsting, paid our debt and brought us in.

Though we were cut off from the Maker, broken down and hollowed out,
Christ freed us from death’s dungeon, and is for us a safe redoubt.

He delights to give us living water, to quench our thirsty soul.
To do this, He, the Master Potter, died in our place on a pole.

So come now to the Fountain of living water and freely drink.
All who thirst for life are welcome; do not back from this offer, shrink.
