Shortly after Jesus had risen, two disciples were on the road to Emmaus.
Still grieving His death they were saying, “Alas, we thought He would save us.”
Then, unrecognized by them, the risen Christ joined them on the road.
He asked of what they spoke, and they shared as, with them, He strode.
They believed Jesus was the Messiah Who’d come to, Israel, redeem,
But the authorities crucified Him; all hope was lost, or so it did seem.
But still some other Christ followers claimed angels told them He was alive.
Indeed the tomb was found empty, but the reason why, they couldn’t derive.
As the Lord heard all this patiently, He then told them, “But don’t you see?
The prophets spoke long ago saying the Christ must suffer before entering glory.”
Then He opened their eyes to understand the prophetic words of Holy Scripture.
The life and death of Jesus perfectly followed what was foretold with rigid stricture.
As they arrived at where they were going, they asked Jesus to, with them, stay.
Receiving this generous, kind offer, He said unto them, “Okay.”
He reclined with them at their table, and He broke the bread and blessed it.
Then He disappeared from their sight as, like a lightning bolt, the thought hit.
“It is Him, the risen Lord Jesus! Did not our hearts within our chest burn?
He’s fulfilled the promises spoken. From the dead He indeed did return!”
Next, just as the ladies who found the tomb empty, they went and told everyone.
God’s Son, Jesus Christ has risen; Over sin and death He has won.
On the cross He bore all our sorrow; fully for all our sin He has paid.
Though dead in the tomb He was buried, in there He has not stayed.
In three days Jesus rose back to life, and all who trust Him will rise too.
His heart, with love and mercy, is rife; come to Him and you’ll be made new.
