The Fear Of My Youth

What I feared in my youth,
Overtook me as a man.
Infirmity struck me,
As adulthood began.

Pain wound round me;
Bound me with cords.
Death called to me,
Promising dark rewards.

Of purpose and meaning,
My life seemed bereft.
Should I even go on?
This feels like cruel theft.

As this I considered,
My heart, it was troubled.
If it’s true there’s no purpose,
Pain’s sting is then doubled.

So as I suffered,
And crawled round in pain,
To God’s Word I turned,
And asked Him to explain.

My Lord, I beseech Thee.
Please tell me why,
In my prime I’ve been cut down,
Like a pig from the sty?

As I read the accounts,
Of those who knew Jesus,
They spoke of His life;
That He came not to grieve us.

He descended to earth,
Humbly as a man.
And He too was cut down,
As adulthood began.

As I read this I wept,
And still I read on.
I read how He took,
The world’s sin upon.

I read of His sorrow,
And anguish of soul.
As He willingly went to,
Horrific death on a pole.

Lord Jesus, You did this,
For me and many more?
You know what it feels like,
To beg and implore?

To ask of the Father,
To deliver from grief.
But also to submit,
To the will of Your Chief?

I see that Your suffering,
Accomplished great gain.
For though You have died,
You rose up again.

Because Christ has risen,
Up from the dead.
All those who trust Him,
No longer need dread.

Though in this world,
We still have trouble.
Lord Jesus will lead us,
Victorious through the struggle.

Nothing we face,
In this life is pointless.
The good Jesus brings,
Will not disappoint us.

You are worthy Lord Jesus;
Worthy oh Lord.
Please let my heart,
To Yours forever be moored.
