I want to fly away from this pain free as a bird,
To a land that, of sorrow, never has heard.
This world’s not my home and I long to be free;
Free of the sadness, pain and debris.
Joy here is fleeting; only sorrow persists.
Laughter always gives way to tears and clenched fists.
If this is natural, why do we desire something better?
Deep down we know death is an unnatural fetter.
Our hearts remember what our minds have forgot.
We were made for Eden; a place free of rot.
It was a beautiful garden where God Himself dwelt,
But we sinned against Him and now, death, we’ve been dealt.
Sin’s penalty is death and this judgement is just,
But we were made for life; not to return to the dust.
This is why we chafe at the unnatural sting,
Of suffering, death and the sorrow they bring.
Praise be to God that in His selfless love,
He, Jesus Christ, came down from above.
He was born as a man and bore our disgrace,
When He suffered and died on the cross in our place.
In a tomb He was buried, but rose on the third day.
Now death is defeated; praise the Name of Yahweh.
Though we are born into exile on Earth,
We can return to Eden and receive rebirth.
All who trust Jesus will obtain life eternal,
Be brought home to Heaven, and saved from Hell infernal.
Having come to faith, still for a time we dwell here,
But the day of our homecoming draws ever more near.
I want to go home and one day I shall;
I want to leave behind this cursed locale.
Oh Lord my God, please graciously help me,
To be faithful here until Your face I see.
This time is not wasted; it’s part of Your plan,
To use me to show Your love to my fellow man.
Help me to be fruitful until I go home,
And persevere until I know perfect shalom.
One day, like a bird, I will fly away,
And go home to God’s kingdom free of death and decay.
