In the shadow of the cross we find shelter from the heat.
In the shelter of the cross we find God’s grace free and sweet.
Seeing us drowned and dead in a tumultuous sea of sin,
Jesus, our God, took on flesh and dove headfirst in.
Up on land He hauled us; we were cold and lifeless.
Then He, the great I Am, gave us a gift most priceless.
It’s not that we are dying, but for our sin we’re already dead.
So, with sighs, tears, and blood perspiring, Jesus in love said,
“The just wage of sin is death, so I will die in their place.
With My own life I’ll pay their debt; a crown of thorns shall mar My face.”
Then He did just that; His sinless, divine blood was spilled.
He fully drained the cup, that with God’s foaming wrath was filled.
He was beaten and nailed to a cross, bearing all our sin and strife,
In order to be our ransom, and raise us back to life.
Proving the work is finished, He rose again on the third day.
By His death, our death is diminished, because our debt He did pay.
Now death is but a veil for all who trust in Christ;
A sad but temporary travail, for His blood has sufficed.
He snatched us out the fire, and His cross casts a long shadow;
The invite to all is broad, but the shadow, it is narrow.
Only through faith in Christ can we be saved from the fall,
But all are indeed welcome to answer to His call.
Our Lord is rich in mercy, and His love for us is great.
Take shelter in Him today before it is too late.
This is the day of salvation if you still draw breath.
Repent, trust in Christ, and be raised to life from death.
In the shadow of the cross look up and see our loving Savior,
Find rest and shelter from the heat; bask in His love and unearned favor.
