Over the hearts and minds of men there’s a veil,
That results in spiritual blindness.
The blindness to truth this veil does entail,
Means not that people are mindless.
But they only see the effect, not the cause;
Observe the rain but deny God Who sent it.
Yet creation’s complexity should give us pause,
As the existence of our Creator, we admit.
Many also read the gospel accounts;
The inspired eyewitness testimony.
But what they take away only amounts,
To unbelieving indifference or even acrimony.
Yet some who read these words are changed;
In Christ they rise from death to life.
They see that on the cross God exchanged,
Places with us to bear our sin and strife.
The reason for this disparate response,
Is not that one group is superior.
Those who, in Christ, themselves ensconce,
Must not think others inferior.
We who have come to Christ and believed,
Must remember we’re beggars, given grace.
Seeing those who haven’t, Heaven’s Bread, received,
Should cause fountains to run down our face.
Oh Lord Jesus, please fill our eyes,
With compassionate tears for the lost.
Only You can remove the veil of sin’s lies,
And our stony, frozen hearts, defrost.
Fill and burst my heart’s dam with love,
Flowing from You, through me, to others.
Help me greet their hardness gentle as a dove,
And see more become sisters and brothers.
Oh Lord, the only reason I see,
Is because mercifully, my eyes, You did open.
From slavery to sin You set me free,
To repent and believe what You’ve spoken.
Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy oh God,
On those hearts still veiled by death’s shroud.
With the sin of the world, Lord Jesus, You were shod,
And dying for us, down, Your head bowed.
But in the tomb You did not remain,
You rose for You can do all things.
Lord, just as You saved me, this request I maintain:
Please bring many more under Your wings.
