And So It Ends

(A reflection on death penned the day of a great actor’s passing.)

Another great man is buried, and sadly, so it ends.
The smoke from another quenched candle, swirling upward, extends.

Another race has been run; the finish line has been crossed.
Will they burst forth into glory or forever, in darkness, be lost?

For when one of us dies, we should say, “And so it begins.”
Will they enter Heaven’s gates, or have to pay for their sins?

Our brief existence here is merely eternity’s doorstep.
If we ignore this fact, we make a grave misstep.

Are any of us truly great, when our life is but mist?
Forsooth, we’re “dust in the wind;” do not this thought resist.

Consider oh mortal man the brevity of life and be wise.
Do not let the cares of this world rob the sight from your eyes.

Nothing obtained here, nor anything we’ve achieved,
Will accrue to our credit on the day we leave many bereaved.

It is the fate of all to die and then, before God, stand.
He is no respecter of persons, for all have broken His command.

There is a God in Heaven with Whom we must deal,
And no great deeds we’ve done will, our sin from Him, conceal.

But in His selfless love He has made a way,
To cover over our sin and wash it all away.

He, the loving Lord Jesus, humbly suffered and died,
So forgiveness and life to us might be supplied.

He bore our transgressions and for our sin was bruised.
In a borrowed tomb He was buried, but for only three days, this, He used.

Jesus rose up again having fully paid our sin’s debt.
With boundless love and grace, our rebellion, He has met.

Now to all who trust Him as Lord God and Savior,
Eternal life is granted in spite of our failure.

When those who, in Christ, die, it’s not said, “And so it ends.”,
But rather, “And so true life begins.”, for to Heaven, their soul ascends.

All praise, glory and honor, be to Jesus the Lamb.
Our risen King Who has saved us; the loving great I Am.
