Oh Defeated Death

Death:
Oh mortal man, what will you do?
No matter how you run, I’m coming for you.
Keep your jewels, I care for them not.
By nothing you’ve gathered can I be bought.

Consider your doom and sink into despair.
Go on and cry; I’m Death, I don’t care.
The day is soon coming when you shall face,
The curse of sin that’s on Adam’s race.

All have sinned and are mine by right.
To throw off my yoke, you have not the might.
Before long you’ll be put in the grave;
All come to me, both noble and knave.

I’ll break your body and you will weep;
You shall sink and languish in caverns deep.
Abandon all hope ye who live down here;
Though you breathe today I’m drawing near.

Believer:
Oh defeated Death, don’t make me laugh,
Or have you forgotten your greatest gaff?
On the day you killed the Lord of Life,
You sealed His victory and ended my strife.

For Jesus left you routed on the field;
Now your claim on me is repealed.
The wages of sin indeed is death,
But the Lamb of God gave up His own breath.

He rose from the grave and put you to shame.
Now freedom for the captives He does proclaim.
For we who trust Him, you’re but a veil,
We will pass through to life at the end of this trail.

Though you crush my body, you can’t take my soul.
And one day even this flesh’ll be made whole.
Jesus will return and the trumpet’ll sound,
Then these dry bones’ll rise up from the ground.

Be silent now Death; get under my feet,
For by His own death, Jesus did, you, defeat.
Now the dead are raised for, the victorys’ won;
Up from the grave rose God’s own Son.

All praise be to You, Jesus Christ, my Lord;
From Heaven on high, grace and mercy is poured.
No power of Hell has claim on me,
For through faith in You I’ve been set free.
